Cold outreach shouldn't be a cold start

The problem

Every semester, thousands of students open a blank email and type some version of the same sentence: "Dear Professor, I am very interested in your research." It's polite, it's generic, and it gets archived in seconds. After a few silent weeks, most students draw the obvious conclusion, that professors don't reply to undergrads, and stop trying.

Both sides lose. Students give up on research before they've really started. Professors never hear from the motivated people who would have been a great fit for their lab. The connection that should have happened just doesn't, because the first email looked like every other first email.

What ReachOut does

ReachOut turns that cold start into a warm one. It finds professors whose recent work actually matches your background, scores how likely each one is to reply, and surfaces their real email address from open sources. Then it helps you write a specific email anchored to one of their recent papers, in your own voice and sent from your own address.

The result reads like a message from a student who did the reading, because you did. You can follow the whole flow, step by step, on the how it works page.

Who it's for

ReachOut is built for students whose next step depends on a professor writing back. That includes undergrads hunting for a first research position, students applying to grad school who need to contact potential advisors before the deadline, and anyone chasing REUs, summer research, or an internship in a specific lab. If you've ever stared at a faculty page not knowing what to say, this is for you.

Built on open data

Professor profiles and publication records come from OpenAlex, the open index of the world's research. Email addresses are discovered from free public sources like Europe PMC, open-access papers, and institutional pages, and every one is labeled honestly. An address is marked verified when it was found in a published paper, and best-guess when it was derived from an institution's email pattern.

There is no scraping behind paywalls and no purchased contact lists. If we can't stand behind an address, we tell you, and we always leave you a way to find it yourself.

Our anti-AI stance

ReachOut is openly anti-AI. Professors are drowning in AI-written cold emails, most can spot one by the second sentence, and the moment they do, the reply chance goes to zero. So ReachOut takes the opposite bet. The matching runs on open citation data, the papers are real, the email addresses come from published sources, and the email itself is written by you. We will point you to the right professor and the right paper, but we will never generate a fake-personal message in your name. One real email from a student who did the reading beats a hundred generated ones.
